The Mets Are in Big Trouble

Mike DeJean? Mike DeJean? Why?

Today the Mets traded the expendable Karim Garcia to the Orioles for Mike DeJean, the most useless reliever this side of Billy Taylor, August 1999. DeJean has been terrible for the Orioles this year, but apparently, his ERA is below 5 over the past six weeks. For the year, his ERA is a tad over 6.00 and he has allowed close to two base runners per nine innings. Stellar.

As far as the O's go, I'm super happy they got rid of the awful DeJean, but what is the point of trading for Karim Garcia? Now all the Birds have to do is get rid of Jason Grimsley as well. Maybe for Shane Spencer?

By the way, Denny Bautista, the young stud they traded for Albert Belle's enabler Grimsley is dominating in the minor leagues right now.

I think this might be the first trade these two teams have made since before the 1999 season in which the Mets acquired Armando Benitez and the Orioles received Charles Johnson in a three team trade.

i can't remember who they traded for taylor. i think isringhausen was in the kenny rogers trade made within the same week. long for taylor? or maybe long was also in the rogers trade? where's apes when you need him?

update-

in garcia's first game with baltimore, he hit 2 homers and drove in 5 runs, which is more runs than he drove in over the last 7 weeks with the mets.

I was going to post that until I saw that you did. Based on the Baltimore Sun it looks like the firing of Mazzilli is inevitable.

I think the Mets dealt Isringhausen for
Billy Taylor. Great move. Also, I think the two
teams did another deal since the armando trade--3
months of mike bordick (whom they then re-signed after
the end of the year) for melvin mora. Another great
deal for the Mets.

Baseballprimer.com's Transaction Oracle on the
garcia/dejean deal: "An equal trade on both sides in
that both teams are giving up someone they don’t want
for someone they won’t want." Garcia's two homers and
5 rbis are already more than dejean will contribute to
the mets the rest of the way. garcia's presence on
your roster, while inconsequential, does not actually
make you worse--unlike dejean.

oh right, bordick for mora.

okay, if isringhausen was traded for taylor, who did the mets trade to get kenny rogers? tlong?

Yep--long and leo vasquez (no relation to leo gomez).

not as bad a deal--krog, though crummy, was actually good for the mets at the end of '99, no?

rogers was decent until he walked in the pennant winning run for the braves in the 11th inning of game 6.

A big thank you to baseball-reference.com. From the Billy Taylor page:

7/31/99: Traded by the Oakland Athletics to the New York Mets for Jason Isringhausen and Greg McMichael

looking at his stats, he had been a pretty decent reliver up to the point he landed on the Mets. he only pitched 13.3 innings for them with an ERA > 8.00. ouch.
